Boston Real Estate Times: From Junkyard to Jewel: How Damian Szary and Redgate Are Redefining Multifamily Living
When Damian Szary co-founded Redgate in 2010, he wasn’t just launching a real estate firm—he was setting out to reshape how urban communities are imagined, built, and lived in.
That vision, formed during the wake of the 2008 financial crisis, was rooted in a belief that transformative projects could come to life beyond the urban core—with the right mix of innovation, collaboration, and long-term thinking.
Fifteen years later, that philosophy is thriving. As Principal and Managing Director of Redgate Capital Partners—the firm’s multifamily investment and development platform—Szary is at the helm of some of Greater Boston’s most ambitious residential communities.
On Sept. 11. 2025, Szary will be honored with the 2025 Multifamily Excellence Award at the Boston Real Estate Times’ Annual Awards gala.
Redgate’s latest development, Gibson Point in Revere, MA, has earned the 2025 Multifamily Excellence Award for redefining waterfront living through wellness-centered design, sustainability, and next-generation amenities.
Founded by a team of seasoned real estate professionals with backgrounds spanning development, finance, and brokerage, Redgate brings a rare, vertically integrated approach to every project. The firm operates across investment, advisory, and project management services, with a proven ability to navigate complex developments from vision to delivery.
With offices in Boston, Bethesda, and Raleigh, and a growing national portfolio, Redgate continues to deliver value by combining institutional expertise with entrepreneurial execution.
Here is Q/A with Szary to learn more about the firm’s growth trajectory, the milestones that shaped his journey, and the lessons that continue to guide his work.
Boston Real Estate Times: What are your company’s growth plans over the next 3–5 years?
Damian Szary: Over the next 3 to 5 years, Redgate’s growth plans are bold, measurable, and already in motion, with a clear trajectory toward doubling both revenue and headcount while driving long-term value creation for its team and partners. In 2025 alone, the company added 12 new team members to support its expanding portfolio, and its recent headquarters relocation represents a 33% increase in space with built-in capacity for further expansion. All service lines are growing across advisory, investor, and institutional services, with expanding capabilities in areas such as asset management and strategic operational leadership in change management, stakeholder alignment, and efficiency. Redgate’s investment platform is actively advancing a robust pipeline across asset classes, creating compelling, risk-adjusted opportunities across its three geographic focus areas.
BRET: Was there a mentor or role model who helped shape your path?
DS: One of the most influential people early in my career was Deb Gould, a top commercial broker in Boston who is now Executive Managing Director at Newmark. We met while I was working as a development intern at Spaulding & Slye.
Deb’s work ethic, drive, and ability to bring deals together left a lasting impression on me. Most importantly, observing her approach to deal-making gave me the confidence and framework to source deals on my own – something that continues to define my work today. Having a brokerage background taught me to refine skills that are typically rarer in developers – like cold calling, chasing off-market opportunities, and facilitating transactions, for example.
After working as a broker, I knew I wanted to dive deeper into the industry, so I pursued a Master’s in Real Estate Development at Columbia University. Upon completing the program, I shifted into development-focused roles, but I was continuously aware that my time working alongside Deb had sharpened my strengths, expanded my industry knowledge, and affirmed that real estate was where I truly belonged. Even years later, I can see how that experience fundamentally shaped the way I approach the field today.
BRET: What has been one of the most impactful or rewarding moments of your career?
DS: Redgate’s first project, Maxwell’s Green in Somerville, remains the project I’m proudest of to this day.
Kyle Warwick, Founding Principal of Redgate, and I worked on Maxwell’s Green as one of the first multifamily developments following the financial crisis in 2008. We were building a new company with Redgate, essentially starting from scratch with no safety net, and we had to figure out how to make this project work. We had great project partners in AEW and Santander, and ultimately, we figured out methods to make it work and the project proved successful.
To this day, the spirit and effort behind the Maxwell’s Green project shaped the entrepreneurial approach we bring throughout all of Redgate’s portfolio. More than anything, it established our focus on outer urban core developments – places beyond city centers that are ready for thoughtful, transformative development. Maxwell’s Green set the precedent and the tone for what Redgate would evolve into today, and I’m proud of what we were able to achieve as a new company during that time.
In today’s market, the same optimism, problem-solving mindset, and long-term vision are fueling our resilience and driving us to keep creating exceptional places to live and work. Maxwell’s Green set the tone for Redgate’s path. I’m proud of what we achieved then and of what we will continue to build moving forward.
BRET: If you could give one piece of advice to your younger self, what would it be?
DS: Taking time to learn real estate finance and advanced modeling skills early on in your career will serve you more than you may realize. I’d suggest to any young professional: spend your early career mastering the financial side of development, such as how to underwrite, how deals are structured, and what makes them work. Having that foundation is everything, and it gives you the confidence to think strategically. If you understand real estate finance, you’ll consistently be able to see opportunities others might miss. For me, getting comfortable with that side of the business early on made the difference, and it’s the advice I’d give any person looking to have a long-term career in real estate.
500 Ocean Ave. in Revere Beach – a 305-unit mixed-use project with oceanfront views, resort-style amenities, and direct access to the Blue Line – was developed by Redgate and set the tone for modern waterfront living.
